Composite Fillings

White Fillings Patient in West Palm Beach

Composite fillings are dental fillings made of a soft white material that is hardened for durability. It is one of two types of tooth colored fillings offered by many cosmetic dentistry practices, the other type being Porcelain Dental Inlays and Onlays.

Benefits of Composite Fillings
One benefit of composite fillings is that they are tooth colored. Unlike metal fillings, which are obviously not natural, composite fillings are a similar shade and texture to your natural tooth enamel, and therefore fairly difficult to recognize as fillings.

Boynton Beach Cosmetic Dentist, Dr. John Sarris provides all his patients with metal-free dental repairs. This protects you from the potential harm of mercury leaking from metal fillings and the mercury vapor stimulated by hot food and drinks. Further, dental composite does not expand and contract, since it contains no metal. Your teeth will therefore not fracture or break. On the contrary, they will hold together well because the composite is bonded to your tooth tissue and this extends the tooth’s life.

Composite Filling Procedure
The procedure is like that for metal fillings, in they are both direct restorations. Dr. Sarris does your composite filling directly on the tooth, as opposed to having a dental lab make them, as is done with inlays and onlays. After cleaning out all decay and debris, he applies the composite in small increments until the tooth is filled out to the required shape and contour.

He will have you bite down on special paper that puts marks on your teeth if they are not meeting properly. After doing all required fine-tuning, he will use a curing light for a few seconds to harden the composite, and your filling is complete.

Caring for Your Composite Fillings
Composite fillings can be cared for like your natural teeth. That is, you should brush and floss twice daily and see your dentist for regular cleanings. Composite fillings are durable, but a little less so than porcelain inlays and onlays. They also do not have as much pearly shine as porcelain. You can choose the best type of filling for your situation. Dr. Sarris is always happy to answer questions and explain the pros and cons of any given procedure.

We will be happy to schedule your complimentary white fillings consultation if you contact our dental office. We serve residents in Fort Lauderdale, Boynton Beach, Boca Raton and the surrounding areas of Florida.
