Dental Technology
Modern dentistry has moved light years beyond the dentistry that our grandparents knew. Computers and lasers have played a big part in this vast improvement. They have given rise to new procedures, earlier detection of problems, faster treatments, greater safety, drastically reduced pain, and far better communication between dentist and patient.
Dentist in Fort Lauderdale, Dr. Sarris has invested in superior modern dental technology. Our goal is to provide you with the best that modern dentistry can offer – in dental materials, sophisticated treatments, a friendly and comfortable environment, and state-of-the-art dental technology.
A Paperless Dentistry Practice
One of the factors in excellent dentist/patient communication is instant images. We have large chairside computer monitors and on those screens you can see.
Digital photographs of your mouth taken moments before using our digital intraoral camera. They are in full color and enlarged so that Dr. Sarris can explain what is happening with your teeth, your bite, your gums, and your smile and what the options are for correcting any defects.
Digital X-rays taken a moment ago without the uncomfortable square piece wedged into your mouth that is required for traditional X-rays. Digital X-rays expose you to far less radiation and produce instant images that Dr. Sarris can discuss with you. They let you see what he is looking at, whether it is an old metal filling that is starting to crack the tooth, or a tooth crown with decay beneath it, or an area of premature wear on a tooth where your bite is out of alignment.
The Miracle of Medical Lasers
Dr. Sarris has two lasers designed for working painlessly on human tissue:
- A soft tissue laser – used to quickly and safely remove decayed tissue, and for gum recontouring to treat a gummy smile.
- A hard tissue laser – used for subtle tooth recontouring. This could be part of improving old dentistry that interferes with your bite, such as a dental crown, without totally re-doing it or it could be part of treating your TMD by aligning your upper and lower teeth correctly.
Lasers instantly vaporize unwanted tissue and seal the remaining tissue to prevent bleeding and infection. They also stimulate the gums to grow more vigorously and enclose each tooth more securely.
Sophisticated Diagnosis
Dr. Sarris uses the DIAGNOdent system for very early caries detection. It has a hand-held scanning laser like a pen connected to a unit with a digital readout. As Dr. Sarris scans your teeth, the unit will emit an alert sound when the laser picks up any decay. It is excellent at finding tiny cavities beginning to form on chewing surfaces. This supplements X-ray information which picks up early cavities between teeth and on their roots. We offer tooth-colored fillings either of dental porcelain or white dental composite.
The Vizilite Plus Oral Cancer Screening system is quick and painless. After you rinse with a special cleansing solution, Dr. Sarris will dim the overhead lights and scan your mouth with the Vizilite light stick. Abnormal tissue will show up as white. Vizilite Plus can find tiny lesions that are invisible to the naked eye, which is greatly to your benefit. Oral cancer is one of the easiest cancers to treat if it is diagnosed early enough.
The K-7 Evaluation System gives comprehensive information for the diagnosis of TMD. It uses a light-weight frame worn over the face for a short while and a magnet affixed to the chin. Electrical activity in the jaw muscles is recorded, along with jaw joint sounds and all jaw muscle movement. This data is organized in two printouts: one for Dr. Sarris with more technical detail and a more easily understandable one for you.
Our TENS Unit (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) also helps with TMD diagnosis. Dr. Sarris places electrodes on the head, face and neck areas and while you relax with music or doze off, mild electrical impulses are delivered to the jaw muscles. After 30 or 40 minutes, your lower jaw is relaxed, perhaps for the first time in years. Pain is gone and Dr. Sarris can now document your correct jaw position.
Excellent technology gives you great benefits but it is just one part of our dentistry practice.
