Gum Recontouring in Fort Lauderdale

Many people do not have perfect smiles and the reasons are as unique and various as the people themselves. Many people are unsure why they are unhappy or do not know how the defects could be fixed. In some cases it is not the teeth that are at fault; it is the gums.

Correcting a Gummy Smile
You may have heard the term “gummy smile.” That is a common cosmetic dental problem arising from the fact that gums are covering too much of the teeth. The gum tissue is extending too far over the tooth enamel, making the teeth appear too short. In a quick and easy procedure, Dr. Sarris can use a soft tissue laser to remove excess gum tissue and that solves the problem.

Sometimes the gumline is uneven, with some teeth covered more than others. Dr. Sarris can correct that with the same laser.

Lasers are one of the outstanding new tools of cosmetic dentistry. In the old days, a scalpel was used to recontour the gums, but the laser is a huge improvement over that. Dr. Sarris first applies a topical anesthetic to the gums, then directs the small laser to areas that need correction. The laser vaporizes unwanted tissue instantly and you will not feel any discomfort.

Advantages of the Dental Laser
All lasers are man-made lights, each made for a different purpose. Laser light is not scattered like a car’s headlights or a flashlight. It is precisely focused. If you have ever used or seen a classroom laser pointer you will have the idea. Lasers used for medical and dental purposes are nowhere near as hot as industrial lasers, although they are warm. Light and warmth are two aspects of the same energy.

The soft-tissue laser that Dr. Sarris uses is designed to penetrate the tissue only to a certain depth and to leave nearby tissue untouched. That enables Dr. Sarris to be very exact in how he removes gum tissue to redesign your smile.

In addition to precise targeting, the laser seals tissue it treats, which:

  • Greatly reduces any risk of infection
  • Virtually prevents all bleeding
  • Causes no scarring

Short Recovery Period
Your gums will probably be tender for a few days. Dr. Sarris will give you any prescriptions you need and instructions on how to care for your mouth during the quick recovery period. You should eat and drink carefully, and brush your teeth more gently than usual. Dr. Sarris might advise you not to floss for a day or two and may suggest an effective mouthwash to use instead.

Some people have gum recontouring as part of their smile makeover. It can be combined with many other cosmetic dentistry procedures, such:

If you have multiple dental defects that you would like Dr. Sarris to correct, you can discuss them before anything is done, have your questions answered clearly, and determine a good timeframe for the dental work. Our office also offers affordability options to help offset the cost.
