How to Choose a Sedation Dentist
Sedation dentistry can make you more relaxed about having dental work done; for some patients, sedation dentistry is the only way to tolerate dental work. However, there is a lot of confusion about what sedation dentistry really means. When choosing a sedation dentist you need to fully understand what type of sedation will be used and how it will affect you.
Conscious Sedation
The term “sedation dentistry” is used to refer to many things. To add to the confusion, some dentists and websites refer to “sleep dentistry” and sedation dentistry interchangeably.
Conscious sedation can relax your body and mind during dental procedures without the need for general anesthesia. You will be conscious and breathing on your own, your body will function normally, and you will be responsive. Conscious sedation may be offered in the form of oral sedatives, such as Valium and other pills, inhaled nitrous oxide, or a combination of both.
This form of sedation dentistry does not require the attendance of an anesthesiologist but should be performed by a dentist who is trained in conscious sedation. Dr. Sarris knows how to safely prescribe sedatives for his patients, including how to administer a safe dose, how to determine if you are at risk for a negative drug interaction, and how to monitor you while sedated.
Dr. Sarris trained with and is a member of the Dental Organization for Conscious Sedation (DOCS).
As a member of DOCS, Dr. Sarris is among the dentists who believe that patient comfort is a high priority. He does not believe in pushing his patients to “tough it out.” Painful and frightening experiences with dental work lead to avoidance of dental care, ultimately causing more serious problems and the need for more extensive dental work in the future.
Every positive experience you have in the dentist’s chair increases the likelihood that you will continue to seek timely treatment and even preventative treatment, contributing greatly to your overall dental health. For this reason, Dr. Sarris encourages his patients to accept sedation dentistry if they meet the criteria necessary to be sedated.
