How To Choose A Dentist
Choosing a dentist can be as daunting as choosing a health care plan or a new car. As in any other area of life, our primary concerns are often safety and comfort. But as with other products and services, knowing you are receiving the best requires more research than reading a simple brochure.
Your Dentist’s Credentials
While it may seem obvious that credentials are of enormous importance when you are choosing a dentist, many people simply resort to choosing a dentist who is listed in their HMO list of care providers. However, dentists who work with a particular HMO do so for the benefit of the health care company, as much as for their patients.
While any dentist on your HMO has graduated from dental school, that basic training may not be enough to offer the best care possible. For this reason you should take into consideration extra training, particularly if you are searching for a dentist to provide you with excellence in cosmetic dentistry or neuromuscular dentistry.
Ask your dentist if he or she has completed any specialized dentistry training, such as is offered at the Las Vegas Institute for Advanced Dental Studies (LVI). If the dentist has done extra training for his chosen practice areas, it suggests that he will give his patients extra attention also.
Dentistry Care
In addition to the amount and type of training your dentist has undergone, you should consider the types of dentistry he practices and the procedures he offers. Many dentists may offer procedures they are not well trained in, or may recommend temporary fixes rather than a procedure for which they will have to refer you out.
When you are looking for a dentist or cosmetic dentist, ask him what his policies are on the type of care you are seeking. For example, if you are interested in a dental implant to replace a tooth, ask if he performs the entire procedure himself, or if he will send you to an orthopedic surgeon for the implant and then follow up himself with the new tooth.
Whether or not a dentist offers a procedure is often not enough information to tell you whether the quality of care you will receive is sub-standard or out of this world.
Your Comfort in the Dentist’s Chair
Finding a dentist who offers you comfortable treatment can be as valuable as any other consideration. If you feel anxious at the thought of having dental work done, ask the dentist if he offers anxiolitic dentistry. A mild sedative can relax you, make you feel calm and confident, and transform your whole dental visit. Your dentist may even get more done in one visit than if you were anxious and tense.
When you are consulting with a dentist to determine if he or she would be the best one to choose, you are in a better position if you know more about dental procedures rather than less. Most cosmetic dentists agree that an educated patient is the best kind.
