Porcelain Dental Inlays and Onlays

Serving Fort Lauderdale, Boynton Beach, Palm Beach, West Palm Beach, and Boca Raton, Florida

Porcelain dental inlays and onlays are tooth-colored fillings designed by Dr. Sarris and made in our dental lab. They provide a very strong restoration that lengthens the tooth’s life, enhances its appearance, and is invisible as being a filling. Inlays and onlays cannot be distinguished from the healthy areas of the tooth they fill.

Inlays are smaller than onlays. They fill the area between the tooth cusps, or perhaps a small area on one surface. Onlays fill the area between cusps and also extend out over one or more surfaces. They are a step between a filling and a tooth crown.

Dental porcelain has some of the properties of glass, in that it reflects light, it resists staining, and it is somewhat brittle by itself. But when bonded to a tooth, porcelain is long-lasting and strong, giving your tooth good chewing surfaces.

How Porcelain Dental Inlays and Onlays are Made
Your porcelain dental onlay or inlays would be created in our dental lab by a skilled dental technician who, like Dr. Sarris, has been trained at the  Las Vegas Institute for Advanced Dental Studies. Dr. Sarris will prepare your tooth or teeth by cleaning out all debris and damage, and will make a dental mold of them which he sends to the lab. Our technician will use that to create your inlays or dental onlay for an exact custom fit.

While our technician is doing that you will have a temporary inlay or onlay. Dr. Sarris will then bond your new restoration to the tooth in a way that makes it part of that tooth. The bonding pulls inward on the tooth’s outside edges, holding it all together strongly.

Inlays and onlays take two visits to complete, whereas composite fillings take only one.

Caring for Inlays and Onlays
All porcelain restorations can be cared for in the same way you care for your natural teeth. You should practice good oral hygiene using the following steps:

  • Brush your teeth thoroughly twice a day
  • Floss once or twice a day
  • Have your teeth professionally cleaned twice a year
  • Have any damaged teeth repaired immediately
