Implant Dentistry Questions
What is implant dentistry? Implant dentistry is a cosmetic dentistry procedure which replaces a lost tooth and its lost root in the jawbone. An dental implant is an artificial tooth root and it anchors one or two replacement teeth made of porcelain.
Is implant dentistry a new procedure?
No. Archaeologists have found skeletons with implants in the jawbones, in Ancient Egypt, South America, Europe and the Middle East. In modern times, it was re-discovered by a Swedish orthopedic surgeon. In the U.S., implant dentistry became popular in the 1980s and with the expansion of cosmetic dentistry, many people now know of this strong and permanent way to replace lost teeth.
How should I care for my dental implant? The implant itself is inside the jawbone and requires no care other than basic daily hygiene to keep the gums and bone healthy. West Palm Beach Implant Dentist, Dr. Sarris will want to check on it periodically. The replacement tooth needs the same care as your natural teeth to prevent gum disease. If bacteria were to get below the gumline they could undermine your implant.
Good oral hygiene includes:
- Brushing your teeth at least once a day
- Flossing at least daily
- Eating nutritiously
- Having your teeth professionally cleaned regularly
How long will my dental implant last?
With good care it will last for your lifetime.
Who is a good candidate for a dental implant? Anyone could be a good candidate if they have one or more missing teeth. If you have any gum disease, that would need to be treated first so that your recovery from the implant procedure would not be hindered.
Any condition that would interfere with your full healing from the implant procedure would be assessed and might delay or prevent your implant dentistry. For example, in rare cases, a person has insufficient jawbone width, height, or density to hold an implant. That can usually be addressed by a bone graft or by use of a variant type of implant. If you have diabetes it would need to be under control.
