TMJ Patient in Fort Lauderdale

Do you suffer from recurrent headaches or from pain in the face, throat or ears? Many conditions could cause such pain, but one of them is Temporomandibular Joint Disorder – misaligned jaw joints – abbreviated as TMD, TMJ, or TMJ Disorder. As a qualified neuromuscular dentist, Dr. Sarris can diagnose TMD and treat it effectively.

What is Neuromuscular Dentistry?
Neuromuscular dentistry is an area of dentistry that focuses not just on your teeth and gums, but also on the way your lower jaw moves, the way your upper and lower teeth meet, and any inflammation that may be present in your jaw muscles and nerves. All these things are referred to as your “bite”.

When you have an ordinary filling from most dentists, they will check that the filled tooth meets its opposing tooth properly. That is not neuromuscular dentistry, although it touches on it. Neuromuscular dentistry is not taught in undergraduate dental schools. A general dentist must complete rigorous and in-depth graduate training to become a qualified neuromuscular dentist.

Fort Lauderdale Neuromuscular Dentist, Dr. Sarris completed that training at the  Las Vegas Institute for Advanced Dental Studies, known as LVI. It is generally regarded as the world’s premiere school for both neuromuscular dentistry and cosmetic dentistry, and Dr. Sarris has completed both of those areas of study.

Neuromuscular Diagnosis
This advanced education gives him the trained eye, knowledge of jaw mechanics, and expertise with diagnostic technology to detect your TMD. He can make all required measurements, recordings and analysis, and devise an effective treatment plan entirely customized for your particular bite.

The two principal devices Dr. Sarris uses to diagnose TMJ disorder are:
A TENS unit (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation), which delivers mild electrical energy via electrodes that Dr. Sarris places strategically on the head, face and neck.
The K-7 Evaluation System, which records jaw joint sounds, measures jaw muscle electrical activity, and tracks jaw muscle movements.
