Teeth Crown Patient in Fort Lauderdale

While good oral hygiene can prevent much of the damage adults experience, an accident or trauma can also damage or destroy a tooth. A tooth crown is one of the most common restorations, particularly on back (molar and premolar) teeth.

A well-made dental crown should:

  • Be indistinguishable as a crown
  • Closely match your other teeth in color
  • Feel and function like your natural teeth
  • Be cared for like your natural teeth

Tooth Crown Purposes
A teeth crown, also called a dental cap, is a customized cover for a tooth after all damages and decayed tissue has been removed from it. It protects the tooth stub and prolongs the tooth’s life, avoiding any extraction.

If damage extends into the tooth root, the canal in the root must be cleaned out and filled with dental cement before a crown is placed. This is a “root canal” procedure, so named because it works on the tooth root’s inner canal, where the nerve and blood vessels connect that tooth to the body’s nervous and circulatory systems.

A tooth crown may also be used to replace a missing tooth by being anchored to a dental implant.

Fort Lauderdale Cosmetic Dentist, Dr. John Sarris has a metal-free practice to insure that no dangerous trace metals are used in your dental work. He uses only all-porcelain tooth crowns, made by hand at our preferred dental lab by our special lab technician. You can learn more by reading about How Tooth Crowns are Made.

Metal-Free Tooth Crowns
You may have received a tooth crown in the past which protruded or was uncomfortable. A tooth crown placed by a trained cosmetic dentist, however, should be virtually indistinguishable from your surrounding natural teeth. If you have any doubtful crowns, we can replace them with sturdy, metal-free crowns. Dr. Sarris will match the porcelain so closely to your natural teeth that your crown will not be detectable visually.

Tooth Crown Function
A teeth crown should also function exactly as your natural teeth do. Because dental porcelain is not only natural-looking but also durable, it should last as long as your natural teeth, or even longer. A porcelain tooth crown will not respond to teeth whitening, which means that you should have the whitening done before any crowns or other restorations made from dental porcelain. Porcelain is stain-resistant and will not need any whitening.

Tooth Crown Care
Caring for your teeth crowns is a matter of good oral hygiene. There are always bacteria in the mouth and when food particles are left too long in the mouth, bacteria thrive, multiply, and spread. You want to keep their numbers down and prevent them from getting in between the tooth stub and its crown or below the gumline and into tooth roots.
